Manipulation Under Anesthesia is a way of performing chiropractic adjustments while the patient is under sedation. It is mainly performed on patients who have chronic back or neck pain that has failed to be treated with prior treatments. The pain is caused by scar tissue and adhesions on or around the spinal joints and surrounding tissue.
Dr. Sasan may choose to perform manipulation under anesthesia for a few different reasons. Performing adjustments on a patient with chronic pain can lead to more pain because of the tenderness and soreness of the area. With the patient under sedation, the chiropractor can perform the necessary adjustments to relieve pain without aggravating the injured area. If the patient is conscious during the manipulation, it could be difficult for the doctor to stretch the muscles and perform the necessary adjustments because the muscles tense up. With sedation, the muscles are relaxed the whole time. The scar tissue and adhesions are broken up during the manipulation. Combined with the stretching of the muscles and vertebral adjustments, chronic pain can be relieved with a series of adjustments.
